Who would’ve thought this time last year that 2020 was going to change the world the way it has?

Managing outbreaks was on the radar after the 2009 H1N1 Swine Flu pandemic and 2018 the Hepatitis A multi-state outbreak, but no one was quite prepared for the COVID-19 Coronavirus pandemic when it started spreading across the globe.

Supply chains were immediately strained, toilet paper became scarce, and stay-at-home orders were announced in various states causing businesses and consumers to scramble for essential supplies. The cleaning industry was thrown into the spotlight overnight as custodial and environmental services (EVS) teams were at the forefront in combatting the spread as essential workers.

America Recycles Day: Keep Calm & Recycle On

By: Briana Smith  |  November 13, 2019

America Recycles Day is coming up this Friday, November 15th and it’s a day to educate, to motivate & to make recycling bigger & better!

We are at a crossroads when it comes to the state of the recycling industry. As was mentioned in our The Future of Recycling article, China started banning “foreign garbage” in 2018 which encompassed recyclables from the United States that are often contaminated due to improper collection & disposal practices. This contamination in the recycling stream has caused processing problems at recycling centers here as well, as consumers are unaware of their local waste management rules & regulations resulting in “hopeful recycling.”

By: Keith Schneringer  |  April 22, 2019

Will this estimated total of one billion people include you?

If this estimated total of people won’t include you, and you would like it to, what should you do?

Water for All: Ways Businesses Can Reduce Their Water Usage

By Chris Meyer  |  March 22 , 2019

The fact that clean water will readily flow from the faucet is a given in the developed world. In developing countries, though, finding potable water is often a daily struggle.

That’s why today, World Water Day, is dedicated to “tackling the water crisis by addressing the reasons why so many people are being left behind.” And one of those reasons is the rate at which businesses and individuals in the developed world use water.

According to the African Wildlife Foundation, “If the entire global population had the water habits of the average European or North American, we would need about three and a half Earths to sustain us.”

As gloomy as that may sound, the good news is, there’s no shortage of products, education, and new technology that our businesses can leverage to conserve the water supply.

The Future of Recycling in America

By Keith Schneringer  |  November 1, 2018

Recycling is an activity which has been a part of human societies practically since history has been recorded, and there is evidence of recycling going back to Byzantine times, and even much earlier according to some studies.

Archaeologists have deduced over time that recycling activities increase during times of distress or scarcity, and this observation can be still be seen and validated today as recycling activities have been less than consistent in the post-World War II era of disposable consumerism which continues to thrive to this day. As this article is being written, recycling and waste diversion rates stand at just shy of 35%, according to the United States Environmental Protection Agency.

Despite the best efforts to increase waste diversion rates in America by the U.S. EPA, along with various States and Municipalities, and millions of citizen volunteers, the recycling industry faces enormous challenges in 2018 and moving forward.

Determining the Effectiveness of a Sustainable Floor Care Program

By: WAXIE Floor Care Specialist Team  |  June 8, 2017

A sustainable floor care system should meet the desired outcome of the users with minimal impact on the people involved, the planet, and profitability.

But why does this matter?

ISSA’s last Sanitary Supply Distributor Sales Report estimated annual sales of $1.32 billion in resilient and hard floor care chemicals. When adding labor expenses, waste, and water/energy consumption to that figure this becomes an enormous expenditure within commercial, institutional and industrial facilities. When qualifying this type of investment it’s important to look at why we do it, how it’s done, how it’s measured, and how to improve upon it.
