Ebola Virus Overview

The Ebola virus causes viral hemorrhagic fever disease, a severe and many times fatal disease in humans. The Ebola virus is transmitted by direct contact with the blood, body fluids and/or tissues of infected animals or people. While currently, the Ebola virus is not available for testing and there are no EPA-registered disinfectants to kill the Ebola virus, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is recommending the use of a “registered hospital disinfectant with a label claim for a non-enveloped virus (e.g., norovirus, rotavirus, adenovirus, poliovirus) to disinfect environmental surfaces in rooms of patients with suspected or confirmed Ebola virus infection”.
