Determining the Effectiveness of a Sustainable Floor Care Program

By: WAXIE Floor Care Specialist Team  |  June 8, 2017

A sustainable floor care system should meet the desired outcome of the users with minimal impact on the people involved, the planet, and profitability.

But why does this matter?

ISSA’s last Sanitary Supply Distributor Sales Report estimated annual sales of $1.32 billion in resilient and hard floor care chemicals. When adding labor expenses, waste, and water/energy consumption to that figure this becomes an enormous expenditure within commercial, institutional and industrial facilities. When qualifying this type of investment it’s important to look at why we do it, how it’s done, how it’s measured, and how to improve upon it.

The Evolution of How Floor Finishes Became More Green

By: WAXIE Floor Care Specialist Team  |  May 16, 2017

Historically, green floor finishes were considered inferior to conventional floor finishes. That belief was generally based on durability of green floor finish. Third-party floor finish certifications, such as Green Seal GS-40 or ECOLOGO UL 2777, contain many stringent requirements, but the most significant factor is eliminating metal compounds from the floor finish.

Conventional floor finishes generally utilize zinc to for “crosslinking” within the formula. This creates a very strong and durable bond, helping with durability, wear, scuff resistance, etc. Some early green floor finishes used calcium for crosslinking, instead of zinc. While they met third-party standards, they didn’t meet customer standards. It just wasn’t as durable and the finish “walked off,” leading to more maintenance and more expense for facility operators.

Spring Break Restorative Cleaning at Perkins K-8 in Barrio Logan

By Lee Jackson

On Wednesday March 29th, myself and a motivated group of 14 individuals from the WAXIE Sanitary Supply sales team descended on Perkins K-8 in the Barrio Logan section of San Diego to lend a hand to the custodians with their restorative cleaning.

As the morning began, the WAXIE San Diego team unloaded two trucks worth of commercial floor care equipment and restorative bathroom cleaners, and immediately got to work. Thanks to a prior survey of the school, it was determined that the areas of primary concern for the staff were the floors in a large multipurpose room, their kitchen, a teacher’s lounge, and multiple large restrooms.

By: Keith Schneringer  |  April 20, 2017

An Earth Day Message

The first Earth Day occurred on April 22, 1970 – and as we prepare for the 47th anniversary of that event this weekend, it is worthwhile to look back at the rich and interesting history of this day while we also consider what this event means to us now today, and what it can mean to us into the future.

Let's Do This! Tackling Your Facility Maintenance Spring Cleaning To-Do List

By: Briana Smith  |  April 7, 2017

Now that spring is officially here, and most of the nasty winter weather is behind us, it’s time to tackle some of those tasks that come with the changing of the seasons.

Oftentimes, the brutal winter rains and snowfall leave buildings quite beat up (as evidenced by the accumulation of ice melt and dirt that get tracked across floors and thrashed entrance floor matting). Afterwards the advent of spring brings more pollen into the air, not to mention the build-up of any dust that staff wasn’t able to get to during the winter, causing heightened indoor air allergy issues.

Here are a few things that should be part of your facility’s spring cleaning to-do list:

Wastewater – Rethinking How We View Our Water Resources

By: Briana Smith  |  March 22, 2017

It’s World Water Day – a day to reflect on our own water use while recognizing the world’s water crisis.

As Americans, we often take our abundance of clean water for granted. With the exception of the Flint, Michigan water crisis and regional droughts, most people in the United States give no further thought to their water source past the tap. In contrast, according to UN-Water, “Today, 1.8 billion people use a source of drinking water contaminated with feces, putting them at risk of contracting cholera, dysentery, typhoid and polio.”1
