Workplace Wellness – It Starts In the Restroom!

Guest Post By: Tom Banks, Senior Director Marketing, Georgia-Pacific Professional

In its broadest terms, “workplace wellness” can encompass a wide range of opportunities for today’s facilities managers . . . and the restroom is a great place to start. The workplace restroom is no longer a non-descript space supplied with low-performing supplies. To please today’s high-energy and demanding work force, the restroom has to have a pleasing, modern design; be well lit and ventilated; and be hygienic with the latest in automated touch-free systems for everything from the commode to the sink area for washing and drying hands. The end result can actually help improve a company’s image, help reduce wasted supplies and help the staff to be more productive. Healthy people and a healthy business go hand in hand.

By: Briana Smith  |  May 1, 2014

Spring Fever, Summer Colds, Autumn Sniffles & Winter Chill

It always seems as if there’s something going around…colds, flu, allergies…regardless of the time of year. So shouldn’t everyone practice good hand hygiene year-around, and not just during the winter? After all, norovirus doesn’t go on a summer holiday.

Computer Cleaning - Hotspots for Germs in the Office

February 14, 2013
Originally published on American Cleaning Institute® For Better Living

Think about all the "public" surfaces you touch on your way to work – railings, door handles, coins and tokens, cash machines, elevator buttons and more. Then, when you get to your destination, washing your hands probably isn't the first thing you do. Instead, you probably grab a cup of coffee and turn on your computer. If you power up before you clean up, all the germs and bacteria that commuted with you are transferred from your hands to your workstation. Ugh! And then, if someone else sits down at your computer, you've got all the germs that tagged along with them, too.

FAQs About the Differences Between Disinfecting & Sanitizing

Republished from cleaninginstitute.org  |  August 30, 2012

Q: What is the difference between a disinfectant, an antimicrobial, and a sanitizing product?

A: Disinfectants and antimicrobials destroy pathogenic microorganisms. These two terms are used interchangeably. Sanitizers reduce the number of microorganisms to a safe level by killing them; typically, sanitizers kill 99.9% of these germs.

Any product that claims to kill bacteria or viruses must be registered with the Environmental Protection Agency, so look for products that have an EPA registration number on the product label. For Canadian products, look for the Drug Identification Number (DIN) or the Health Canada registration number.

Tips for Improving Indoor Air Quality

February 21, 2012

Minimize Chemical Pollutants

  • Avoid smoking indoors. Tobacco smoke contains thousands of indoor pollutants at high concentrations.
  • Choose low-emitting products that have been third-party certified and labeled by reputable organizations such as GREEENGUARD, ECOLOGO, Green Seal and the South Coast Air Quality Management District Clean Air Choices – Cleaner Certification. Be wary of manufacturer claims of “no VOC,” “natural” or “alternative.”
  • Minimize the use of harsh cleaners, solvent-based cleaners or cleaners with strong fragrances.
  • Certain activities, such as paint stripping, hobby soldering or gluing, painting, sanding and rock polishing, may create high levels of pollution and should be performed outside.
  • Control car and appliance exhaust. Do not idle cars, lawnmowers or other engines in the garage, especially those that are attached to the house.
