Reading the product label should be the first step in the cleaning process, not only to make sure the directions are understood, but most importantly for safety. It’s best to also have the material safety data sheets (MSDS) on hand to read at the same time so that all safety and protective information is clearly understood prior to chemical usage. The product labels and MSDS will list any precautions or protective gear the user will need, and whether or not any other cleaning chemicals will be dangerous to use at the same time (like using a bleach product and an ammonia product in quick succession).
All chemical manufacturers should provide a MSDS upon request. WAXIE even makes chemical MSDS available for download online at anytime day or night on our website:

“Practicing home hazardous materials safety is important in preventing home fires. Many people use chemicals in their homes safely every day, but as the number of chemical products increases, the risk for improper use and injury also increases.”

There are many things that are important in keeping yourself and your family safe, the proper use and storage of everyday household cleaning chemicals is one of them. The Mesa Fire & Medical Department in Arizona has produced numerous videos on Fire Prevention in their wonderful What’s on Fire series, which everyone should see. WAXIE has been featured in their September episode #3 on proper chemical usage and storage procedures.

Ask Sadie: A Cleaning Q&A Column | September 13, 2012
Q: I have coffee stains on my lobby carpet. Do you have any tips or techniques for getting rid of it? I don’t want to have to replace our carpet.
A: Treating spills on carpets can be a tricky business, especially without knowing what type of carpet you have, as certain carpet types/coloring can react to carpet spotters. Always remember to check for colorfastness before using any carpet spotter. I am going to answer as if it’s a general spot or spill on a fairly easy to clean carpet.

Latex Glove Allergies
Many studies suggest that up to 6% of the general population and up to 13% of healthcare workers will develop an allergic reaction to latex at some point in their lifetime. Reaction to latex can be as simple as irritant contact dermatitis – the development of dry, itchy, irritated areas on the skin, usually the hands. This is caused by not only the latex material, but also the powders added to the gloves to assist in donning them. However, some patients can develop more severe reactions to latex, including anaphylactic shock – a condition where the blood pressure plummets due to the widening of blood vessels in the body. Left untreated, this intense allergic reaction could cause death.
