The Science of Disinfecting

Are we getting it right when it comes to disinfecting? What are the concerns and challenges related to disinfecting of hard surfaces?

biofilmIn today’s world, there are many challenges facing the cleaning industry. Reduction in staffing, thus resulting in lack of cleaning time. Reduction of budgets and the addition of compliance requirements. These shortfalls have significant implications for infection control in facilities. As a result of these shortfalls, many of the infections that are occurring may have been preventable with proper cleaning and disinfecting. It is estimated that 50% of patient room surfaces and 75% of operating room surfaces are improperly disinfected and many of these surfaces develop what is known as biofilm.

surface-2What is microbial biofilm?

A biofilm is a community of microorganisms attached to a substrate which produce EXTRACELLULAR POLYMERIC SUBSTANCES (EPS), (bacteria, fungi, algae, yeasts and protozoa). There is one or typically more species, and as a result there has been a rise in the formation of MRDOs (Multi Drug Resistant Organisms). The biofilm structure protects embedded pathogens and offer an environment for pathogens to persist over extended periods of time making them more resistant against biocides, thus increasing risk to exposure.  Survival of pathogens on surfaces and equipment can be for days and even months.

surface-1Surface cleaning is the most critical step to achieve disinfection. All visible soil, including the protected layer of biofilm, must be removed to ensure surface disinfection. So total solution for disinfecting must have proper cleaning processes, trained and reliable personnel and the most current technology available.

The WAXIE solution is to introduce a best in class product that can assist in compensating for the lack of resources and time needed to maintain a safe environment. Our recommendation is our highly effective, labor saving WAXIE HP Disinfectant Cleaner1,2 This is a one-step hospital-use germicidal disinfectant cleaner and deodorant designed for general cleaning, disinfecting, and controlling mold and mildew odors on hard, non-porous surfaces when used according to disinfection label directions. Not all disinfectants are registered as a one-step and require a pre-cleaning prior to disinfecting. WAXIE HP Disinfectant Cleaner is a highly active Hydrogen peroxide based formula that quickly cleans dirt, grime, mold and mildew stains, body oils and other common surface soils found in hospitals, nursing homes, office buildings, schools and colleges, and many other locations. For use on any hard, non-porous washable surface where disinfection is required. Hydrogen peroxide in concentrations of 3% and 5% have proven effective in reducing the biofilm density in the elimination of biofilms and killing of the bacteria or virus.
